We LOVE Boil Up.
Our GTT Roopu (Guardians of the Garden) have made a delicious Boil Up which we have shared across 3 other roopu. We have used the vegetables from our garden and some leftover sausages from our BBQ. We are fortunate enough to have our caretaker make a delicious naan bread on our big BBQ. It was just like roti, it was delicious.

Duffy Theatre 2019
Duffy Theatre comes to Kaikohe West School 2019
Whainga Ako: to listen and participate when asked at our Duffy Theatre Production
This is the Duffy Crew. When they first started they introduced themselves and then we sang the Duffy song while he played the guitar.
We were all sitting down at Tawaraunui. The sun was shining in our face.
These are some of the characters, the man is Duffy in his muscle costume and the fat round lady is the "Dismantler".
This is Duffy's cousin Sam. Duffy was visiting Sam when he was sucked into the Magical Bricks game that her grandmother had invented. Duffy had to find a way out of the game. He had to solve the code.
Duffy asked the tamariki to help him work out the code on the magical bricks before the Dismantler came and wrecked the word.
What was the word?

Once they had worked out who invented the game, they had to solve the code for getting into and out of the game and it had nothing to do with the grandma's glasses.
So Whetu was the grandma's name, now just to try and remember what she did to access the game.
The codebreaker came in and tried to break up all the letters, but then we knew that it was actually the dance that grandma did that could get us back out.
Finally we both did the dance and escaped back to our own home where our Mum was waiting for us.

Update on our Mural
Here's an update on our Mural, we are just about finished, but need to get a very tall ladder to finish off the top. Unfortunately, we don't allow tamariki up that high, so looks like this will have to wait for the school holidays to be completed.

Northlands Year 4 - 6 mixed Team League 2019
Wow, what a day. A couple of Room 13 tamariki were lucky to travel down to Tikipunga today to compete in a Rugby League Competition.
The day started out with an hour trip down to Tikipunga then a full on 5 game onslaught from some awesome teams around the Whangarei District. The experience was so worth the effort for these League crazy crew. We had such a hard out day, all the players went hard and still had energy to burn. Fanstastic behaviour and manners and all were followed the fairplay rules. You rock Jamie and Miah, ran and ran and tackled and tackled and had a blast.

Tamariki have been working to add the green maunga and the awa, they are getting use to the ridges in the wall surface
Nice pics of a couple of very good friends, handy, was just trying to show the scale of the mural.

Once again a huge thankyou to our whanau members who come and do this mahi for our tamariki.
Thank you Ruku and Bubs - You Rock!

GTT - Cooking is part of our Garden to Table Programme
If there is one thing that tamariki love - it's cooking, and the next best thing they love is eating
We have cooking as part of our GTT programme, we try and use produce from our gardens. This week we used produce from our gardens from last year, yes we had preserves which we used in our Fruit Cupcakes - yummo.

Whainga Ako: to use our Whanaungatanga values in our community.
Some of the tamariki from KWS were privileged enough to be invited to meet the Warriors and do some training with them. Even the weather didn't put them off.

Digital technologies for Ruma Tekau ma Toru with Whaea Deb.
Our tamariki were all hands on with robotics, electronics, minecraft, picmonkey and 3d images.
They all said they would love to do this every day and with the level of engagement evident I think this would be the perfect learning environment for our tamariki. When we can get enough resources to stock our Makerspace area, I think their inquisitive natures will come to the forefront.
Thank you Whaea Deb for a wonderful day.

Fantastic visit to the Navy Ship HMS Wellington which was berthed at Opua Wharf. We were fortunate to be able to see and ask exactly what their role is in keeping our coasts safe and sound. The tamariki were very enthused to get to the bridge of the ship and sit in the captains chair. They asked some very pertinent questions and the officers that were showing us around were equally impressed. Great day had by all. Big shout out to our whanau Rueben and Matiu, who were also very interested in all the information that we learnt.
A view from the Bridge of the ship
One of the officers that was our guide - very cool.
Coming down the gangway.
Checking out the gym onboard. The crew also run around the ship starting at the Hangar then off out to where the helicopter lands and back.
Some pretty hefty questioning going on here in the Officers Lounge.
The mural is underway. We have a very dedicated whanau member who has offered to scale the ladder and get our OSH areas done, so tamariki will be engaged in filling in the bottom half of this mural shortly. Big ups to Whaea Marie for all her awhi - it is looking super fantastic. Will keep everyone updated as we go.
